Austerlitz
Austerlitz is a hill town on Columbia County's eastern edge, named by Martin Van Buren for a Napoleonic victory and laid out along Route 203 between the Taconic ridge and Chatham: the hamlet of Spencertown, where an 1850 academy building now runs as an arts center, and the Austerlitz crossroads at Route 22. Edna St. Vincent Millay wrote at Steepletop here until her death in 1950, and the town still reads much as it did then — dirt roads, stone walls, farmhouses set well back from the road.
